The Origin of Pappy’s Moonshine Madness

It’s not often that we pull back the curtain and let outsiders in on our “creative process” for new barbecue sauce recipes, but the origin story of Pappy’s Moonshine Madness is just too much fun.  Like most barbecue sauce connoisseurs, our best barbecue sauces – including most of the ones we currently sell all over the U.S., Canada, Australia, the U.K., Germany, etc. – were dreamed up and perfected in our home kitchen.  Hell, back in the day, the entire Pappy family was involved in the sauce-makin’ biz, mixin’ our fresh ingredients together in an old-school 25-gallon tilt kettle and letting the kiddies bottle it up.  What 5- and 11-year-old doesn’t love bottlin’ barbecue sauce on their Saturday morning?  Child labor laws...what are those?

A "Dick" is Born

Okay, wait, that sounds bad.  Allow me to explain…

Way back in 1999, during setup for the Best in the Smoky Mountains Rib Cook-Off in Sevierville, TN, the BourbonQ team had just arrived on the scene to continue their summer of dominance of the barbecue circuit.  This was the year that we entered six competitive cooking events, and won three of ‘em!  Not only that, but we swept 1st Place, 2nd Place, and People’s Choice Awards at the Hog Wild BBQ Jam in Fort Wayne, IN, so really we brought home 5 trophies from 6 contests.  Not a bad summer!

Nothing quenches the desert thirst like a shot of moonshine…

As anyone who’s been out on the competitive rib-slingin’ circuit will tell ya, practical jokes come with the territory.  There’s just something about working 18-20 hour days during the dog days of summer, cookin’ up slabs of ribs by the ton, that’ll make you go a bit slap-happy.  Sometimes you just have to unwind, and there’s no better way to do it than to play a “Gotcha!” on your buddies.  This particular prank involves the desert heat of Reno, Nevada, a nearly dehydrated friend, and a poorly labeled container of moonshine…
